The Central Catholic Buttons used a blistering offense start in the first quarter on Thursday night to put the McCollum Cowboys on their heels early, and they would never look back as they went 2-0 on the young season via a 39-13 win.

Central’s Jay Yount connected with Doug Karam on a 20-yard pass to get the Buttons up on the scoreboard midway through the first, and minutes later, running back Gibby Garza found the end zone to close off the drive with a four-yard touchdown run.

Central Catholic scored four consecutive touchdowns before McCollum’s Eric Leija caught a touchdown pass from Ryan Ramirez to close out the third quarter.

Garza found the end zone yet again early in the fourth quarter, this time via a seven-yard pass reception from Yount.

Leija answered back on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez, but the early start by Central Catholic proved too much to overcome, and a Jack Perkins 40-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth sealed it.

Yount was accurate, completing 11 of his 14 pass attempts for 185 yards and three touchdowns.

Garza served as an all-purpose back, picking up 17 rushing yards and 39 receiving yards for two touchdowns.

Yount also found a reliable target in Perkins, who finished with 142 yards.

For McCollum, Ramirez completed eight of his 14 passes for 132 yards and Leija finished with 127 receiving yards.
