ARLINGTON – For the second year in a row, the Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers were 48 minutes away from a state championship.
Last year, Lake Travis was on the receiving end of a dominating championship performance by the Katy Tigers.
Finally, 364 days the Cavaliers got to dole out some punishment of their own, as they defeated The Woodlands Highlanders 41-13 on Saturday night.
Even in what seemed like a boring game, Lake Travis was able to find plenty to be excited about.
Six minutes later Brewer would find Garrett Wilson in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown.
Statistically, The Woodlands dominated time of possession by holding the ball for 17 minutes in the first half, but that number is inflated by how quickly Lake Travis scored on their possessions.
In just under seven minutes on the field, the Lake Travis offense managed to produce 27 first half points for the Cavaliers.
Lake Travis would take their foot off the gas in the second half, leading 27-6. But not before Brewer connected with tight end Cade Brewer (no relation) for his fourth touchdown of the game.
The Cavaliers added one final score for good measure, a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Maleek Barkley, to give Lake Travis a 41-6 lead that would hold as the final.
After opening the season with a loss at Converse Judson, powerhouse Lake Travis would win 15 straight to bring the 2016 state championship home. Something that the Austin area high school hasn’t seen since 2011 when the Cavaliers won their fifth straight state title.
For The Woodlands, they managed to parlay their 7-on-7 state championship from this summer into a 15-1 season, but go into next season with a bit of uncertainty as the Highlanders will only have 22 players remaining from this season’s roster.
